It is so sad to know that in these hard times there are people working to rip you off. Sometimes it is very difficult to tell the legitimate jobs from the scam jobs. I hope everyone will do their research and protect themselves before submitting to a job.

Hi, Barbara,

Great post! Having been victims of ID theft several times, I know that angst it causes people. One incident involved a credit card I never used outside my home. Scammers are so clever, and we all have to be so vigilant in watching out for red flags, which cab be so deviously disguised.

As career professionals, we need to continue educating our clients and prospective clients about this problem.

Thank you for including the information from Job-Hunt by Susan Joyce and the white papers from Kroll, so we can pay it forward to others.!

Best,

~Kathy

Julie,

That's really unfortunate. Hopefully the media will continue to bring these scams to light so people gain the knowledge to protect themselves.

This is so important, Barbara! Great Job! I was hired to write a resume for a young college graduate by his dad. In the course of our conversation when I asked what kinds of jobs he was looking for and where his job search was leading him, he told me about answering an ad that to him looked legitimate... Red flags went up immediately when he told me that they asked for bank information. I told him, tell your dad right away and your uncle...

Sure enough, he lost $1500, could have been worse but for a young graduate, that's a lot.

Dad used to be a private investigator and uncle works for Homeland Security and Special Forces. When I talked to Dad later, he just shook his head...
